Criminal Quilts - an introduction to the project In this first talk of the series, I will share the background to the project and introduce the incredible, emotive and powerful images of women held in Stafford Prison 1877-1916. I’ll talk about the research I did while Artist in Residence in Staffordshire Record Office and share background information about women and the prison system in the 19th century.

In this follow-on talk, I’ll share the textiles and other artworks I have made during the 10 years of Criminal Quilts. This will include both the meaning and the making behind patchwork, print, digital designs, embroidery and collaborations including painting, jewellery and conceptual artworks.

For my final Criminal Quilts talk I'll share my extensive research into the clothing worn by the women in the photographs, both their personal clothing and evidence of prison uniforms. We’ll look at images and evidence from written records and comparison pieces in museum & private collections. I’ll share the prison clothing-inspired garments I created and some of my collection of Edwardian and Victorian garments.
